ARTIST STATEMENT
These series, “For These Times,” and "Chicago and New York X2" are images captured in both New York City and Chicago since Sept. 11, 2001. I determined that I would document these cities with my images speaking to current problems and concerns with black and white, in-camera, double exposures. Like the WPA documentary photographers in an earlier time, I too, am concerned with the issues particular to today such as homelessness, terrorism, immigrations issues, commercialism, body image, the US as a super power, Manhattan pre-Sept. 11th, etc. The challenge of this self imposed assignment, is to find two images that work together, furthering the idea behind each combined image. Wanting the images to be subtle, working on a graphic level, I also want to engage the viewer and promptrepeated viewings. In documenting the turn of the 21st century after this historically traumatic event, a turning point in world history, what can we learn? How will this time be viewed by future generations? My work has been called iconoclastic and important for discussions about these times. |
