THE PROCESS OF MAKING
FIBER SCULPTURE

Joyce P. Lopez - Quiet in Red Detail 1

The first step in working on my commissioned sculptures, which range in size from 31”X31”X2” to 30’X20’X3”, is to prepare a scale drawing with a sample pole of the proposed colors for the client’s approval.

Once approved, I do a large drawing to scale which I place on the floor of the studio. I then take chrome steel poles and lay them one at a time on the drawing and mark where the color changes will occur on each pole in accordance with the overall design of the sculpture.

I then hand wrap each pole with an imported French thread from the approved color palette, checking the measurements as I go. Over 300 thread colors are available for the client to choose from.

Once all the separate poles are wrapped with the thread, they are then bolted from the back onto a steel frame and hang easily from provided wall brackets. I work with installers that are familiar with hanging my work. I have successfully installed many commissions in the corporate, public art and private sectors.

All sculptures are created from chromed steel tubes, and are hand wrapped with French thread. All tubes are bolted to a steel frame. Artist will provide wall mounts for sculpture. Commissions are welcomed. Prices do not include packing, crating, insurance, shipping nor installation.
